My time working at Public Rec
In 2023, I had the opportunity to work for Public Rec, starting as an Assistant Manager through a company called Leap. Leap partners with online-first brands, giving them the opportunity to test the waters in physical retail by opening brick-and-mortar stores in major cities around the US, including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and Boston.
After being promoted to Store Manager, I gained valuable experience not only in the retail space but also in operations. I gained skills in how to plan and budget for activation events in collaboration with local businesses, as well as how to build strong relationships while working with vendors to support in-store needs and promotional efforts. I also worked closely with other brands under the Leap platform, such as NAADAM, Terez, and GOODLIFE.
One of the key requirements when working with a brand like Public Rec is having strong garment knowledge. It’s essential to clearly explain to customers what sets the clothing apart from competitors—whether it’s the fabric quality, how it performs in different weather conditions, or most importantly, the fit. This level of product knowledge is crucial when helping customers find pieces that suit both their lifestyle and personal style—whether they’re working in a corporate setting or enjoying Sunday brunch.
On the operational side, Leap is a highly tech-driven platform. I regularly used tools such as Concrete, Deputy, Monday.com, Microsoft Office Suite, and both the front- and back-of-house functions of Shopify. These programs were essential for managing daily operations and ensuring the store ran smoothly and efficiently.
I maintained consistent communication with both brand teams and vendors, staying involved in every step of the process—from merchandising to feedback. This hands-on approach allowed me to provide informed suggestions on how to improve the garments and overall customer experience.
